Brackets …

covers the intersection of technology and journalism in the internet age — in a world where everyone has a smartphone and a voice on twitter. Each month, Brackets articles will take a deep dive into one of the following categories

Trailblazers: Interviews with industry leaders in tech and journalism, and introductions to their tools, insights, and workflow. Recent features include Emmy-winning New York Times graphic journalists and investigators.

Techniques: In this section, I’ll experiment with the hottest new trends in data journalism — from “scrollytelling” to sentiment analysis in the newsroom, digesting and explaining the approach.

Products: Lastly, I’m always on the hunt for new tech-journalism products from new media platforms like Clubhouse or open source tools like Gephi. Every month, I’ll do a product review on the cutting edge tech in this space so that you’ll never miss the next news-tech headline.

Edward Tian

I’m currently an open source investigator with the BBC Africa Eye, and previously a contributing writer for Bellingcat. I’m also working on a data mapping startup fighting against gerrymandering in the US.

Not taking things here too seriously, I’m hoping to write more and share my obsession for emerging newsroom technologies with this amazing community.
